The 4th Album by A Cappella Group 'MayTree' – "5028"

South Korea's representative a cappella group 'MayTree' has released their 4th album.

MayTree, whose skills have been recognized in both domestic and international a cappella scenes as well as classical choral scenes—including winning Gold in the Pop & Jazz category at the World A Cappella Competition in Austria, Europe, the home of a cappella, from 2009 to 2013, as well as taking 1st place in various international choir competitions—has returned this time with an album 'closer to the true essence of a cappella,' '5028.'

At a time when even a cappella recordings are gradually losing their 'human touch,' this album is rather filled with 5 tracks that are even more 'human.'

The title track '5028' is the vehicle license plate number of the vehicle that has carried MayTree across the country for 13 years, expressing MayTree's bright and cheerful image of moving forward as if embarking on a road trip, through music composed solely of scat singing without lyrics.

In 'Astrud,' where the briskness of the samba rhythm and the clear tone of the male and female main vocalists deliver freshness, the authentic taste of a cappella is well preserved by highlighting the natural sound of the vocals without artificial techniques. George Gershwin's masterpiece 'Summertime' maximally preserves the feel of the original track while adding a somewhat passionate sensation in the latter half, reinterpreting it in MayTree's unique style. MayTree's version of 'Sarangga,' a song by music director Park Jin-gyu previously released as a digital single under '17 Musicians' Collaboration,' incorporates Chunhyang's deep yearning for Yi Mong-ryong along with the anticipation of meeting again someday through MayTree's interpretation, allowing listeners to feel Korea's distinct sentiment. 'Memories,' which has a somewhat different feel from the original art song, presents another interpretation of the song through warmth and a forward-looking perspective rather than sorrowful longing.

This album stands out for its contemplation and effort to bring out the inherent beauty of human beings, with noticeable endeavors to capture the members' voices as they naturally are, such as completely avoiding the doubling commonly used in chorus parts. In our country, where a cappella music itself is unfamiliar and albums are rare to find, attention should be paid to MayTree's 4th album '5028,' which contains non-artificial a cappella close to being 'raw.'

대한민국을 대표하는 아카펠라 그룹 메이트리(MayTree)가 그들의 4번째 앨범을 발표하였다.

2009년부터 2013년까지 아카펠라의 원조인 유럽의 오스트리아 세계 아카펠라 대회 팝&재즈 부문 금상을 비롯, 각종 국제 합창제에서도 1위를 차지하는 등 국내외 아카펠라계, 그리고 클래식 합창계에서도 그 실력을 인정받고 있는 메이트리가 이번엔 좀 더 '아카펠라의 본연에 가까운' 앨범 '5028'로 돌아왔다.

아카펠라 음원들마저 점점 '인간다움'을 잃어가고 있는 이 때에 오히려 더욱더 '인간다운' 음원 5곡으로 채워진 앨범이다.

타이틀곡 '5028'은 13년 동안 메이트리를 싣고 전국을 다닌 메이트리의 차량 번호로, 마치 차를 타고 여행을 떠나는 듯 앞으로 전진해 나가는 메이트리의 밝고 경쾌한 모습을 가사 없이 스캣 만으로 이루어진 음악으로 표현하였다.

삼바리듬의 경쾌함과 남녀 메인 보컬의 청아함이 신선함을 주는 'Astrud' 에서는 인위적인 다른 기술 없이 보컬의 소리를 그대로 잘 살려 아카펠라의 맛을 그대로 잘 살렸으며, George Gershwin의 명곡 'Summertime'은 원곡의 느낌을 최대한 살리되, 다소 격정적인 느낌을 후반에 추가하여 메이트리만의 스타일로 재해석하였다. 이미 '뮤지션 17인의 collaboration'이라는 디지털 싱글 음원으로 발매된 바 있는 박진규 음악 감독의 곡의 메이트리 버전 '사랑가'는 메이트리의 해석으로 이몽룡을 그리는 춘향의 애틋함과 언젠가 만날거라는 기대감도 함께 포함시켜 한국인 특유의 정서를 느낄 수 있다. 원곡인 가곡과는 다소 다른 느낌의 '추억'은 그리움의 애절함보다는 따뜻함과 앞을 향한 해석으로 또 다른 곡 해석을 제시하였다.

이번 앨범에서는 코러스 파트에 흔히 사용하는 더블링을 전혀 사용하지 않는 등, 멤버들 목소리 그대로의 모습을 담기위한 노력들이 눈에 띄는 등, 인간이 가진 본연의 아름다움을 잘 살리기 위한 고민과 노력이 돋보이는 앨범이다. 아카펠라 음악 자체가 익숙하지 않고 앨범 역시 찾아보기 힘든 우리나라에서, 인위적이지 않은 '날 것'에 가까운 아카펠라를 담은 메이트리의 4번째 앨범 '5028'을 주목해야 할 것이다.
