Acacia 2nd Single Album 'Ode to Youth'

'A cappella group Acacia.' Starting with winning the Lyricist Award at the 'Wangsimni Song Festival' hosted by KMTV in September 2005, followed by the Gold Prize at the 'Gotgori Song Festival' hosted by the Gyeonggi Entertainment Association a month later in October, and finally seizing the Grand Prize at the 2nd Korea Song Festival hosted by the National Theater in December, they are a talented co-ed a cappella group that swept domestic music festivals in the second half of 2005. If their first single album 'Acacia 0.5', which was released by gathering those award-winning songs, was a starting point to look back on a frantic year of what they had done and what they could do, their second new single album 'Ode to Youth' is a process of confirming what they themselves want to do. If the first single attempted new things with arrangements in various genres by making the most of their distinct backgrounds—each having done different music as folk singers, musical actors, and CM song singers—they are now creating their own color with more comfortable and organized arrangements, even for the same folk songs and folk music.

A cappella? Nothing to listen to except harmony?

'Ode to Youth' is also unique in its composition. While single albums with four or five songs are usually filled with remixes led by a title track and a B-side track, 'Ode to Youth' followed the structure of a full-length album starting from an intro and ending with a bonus track. Korean traditional music arrangements, such as mouth-made haegeum sounds hidden in the cheerful pop arrangement 'intro-in the morning,' naturally lead into the folk song 'Saeya Saeya.' Acacia's experimental spirit, which made its first attempt at Korean traditional music a cappella with 'Ongheya 2006' in the previous album, has been refined much more stylishly and is establishing itself as an a cappella repertoire that only they can do.

'Acacia,' aiming for jazzy a cappella where not only harmony but also solo parts come alive playfully, says that, contrary to what their award history suggests, a cappella is not a difficult song for listening packaged with glamorous harmonies to show off vocal skills. Acacia's songs, which show that even through a cappella, pieces of our everyday lives can be delivered purely as they are, are a cappella with living lyrics that one can hum along to and sing at karaoke. Therefore, the title of this single, 'Ode to Youth,' is their very own story. To them, whose average age is in their mid-30s, youth is a treasure just lost from their fingertips, as well as a lingering regret of letting it pass without realizing it was a treasure. Hasn't everyone felt apologetic toward their own youth... Standing at the end of that youth, the pulsing rhythm filled with excitement for the new time they face is bright and cheerful, just like their hearts sending off their youth with joy.

The following track 'Acacia' is also a song containing honest affection for their own music. A calm medium-tempo song seemingly imbued with the sorrow of those who had previously failed in singing solo until they could gather again past their youth to sing, it showcases their strength as a team that includes a composer among its members, capable of self-composing and arranging. The standout track on this single is the final bonus track, 'Little Star.' A song filled with love for children, which they naturally come to care for at their age group, it demonstrates that they are taking on new repertoires following their Korean traditional music repertoire with an unhurried tempo so that adults can also enjoy it, and rich arrangements unlike a typical children's song.

Perhaps the reason it makes one feel so full despite being a single is that the unhurried hearts of those who do not try to prove with just a single album that they are moving forward step by step are conveyed. Having abandoned the thought that only one song needs to catch on, 'Ode to Youth' is comfortable enough to listen through all tracks without burden. Both to those tired of today's songs playing everywhere—either heavily emotionally overdosed R&B or fast dance music that can never be kept up with—and to a cappella fans weary of similar repertoires arranging famous foreign songs, their continued challenge will be as fresh as the scent of acacia.

아카펠라로 전하는 봄날 향기 !

아 카 시 아 두 번째 Single Album [청춘예찬]

‘아카펠라그룹 아카시아’. 2005년 9월 KMTV가 주최하는 ‘왕십리가요제’에서 작사상으로 수상한 것을 시작해서, 한달 뒤 10월에는 경기도 연예협회가 주최하는 ‘곳고리가요제’의 금상을, 12월엔 마침내 국립극장에서 주최하는 제 2회 한국가요제에서 대상을 거머쥐며 2005년 하반기 국내 가요제들을 휩쓸고 다닌 실력파 혼성 아카펠라 그룹이다. 그 수상곡들로 모아서 냈던 첫 싱글앨범 [아카시아0.5]는 이들이 무얼 해왔는지, 무얼 할 수 있는지 정신없이 지나온 1년을 돌아보는 출발점이었다면, 두 번째 새 싱글앨범 [청춘예찬]은 이들 자신이 무얼 하고 싶은지 확인하는 과정이다. 첫 싱글이 저마다 포크가수로, 뮤지컬 배우로, CM송 가수로 지금껏 해오던 음악이 서로 다르다는 개성을 살려서 여러 장르의 편곡으로 새로운 시도를 해봤다면, 같은 민요, 포크라 해도 보다 편안하고 정돈된 편곡으로 이제는 그들만의 색을 만들어 가고 있다.

아카펠라? 화음빼곤 들을게 없다?

[청춘예찬]은 구성도 특이하다. 네다섯곡이 실리는 싱글 앨범이 보통 타이틀곡과 커플곡을 앞세워 리믹스들로 채워지는데 비해 [청춘예찬]은 인트로부터 시작해서 보너스트랙으로 끝나는 정규앨범 구성을 따랐다. 경쾌한 팝편곡인 intro-in the morning 에 숨어있는 입으로 내는 해금 소리 등의 국악편곡이 민요 ‘새야새야‘로 자연스럽게 이어진다. 지난 앨범에서 ‘옹헤야 2006’으로 국악 아카펠라를 첫 시도했던 아카시아의 실험 정신은 훨씬 세련되게 다듬어져 그들만이 할 수 있는 아카펠라 레파토리로 정착되고 있다.

화음뿐만 아니라 솔로부분이 재미있게 살아있는 Jazz적인 아카펠라를 지향하는 ‘아카시아’는 자신들의 수상경력이 무색하게도 아카펠라가 가창력을 과시하는 화려한 화음으로 포장된 어려운 감상용 노래가 아니라고 한다. 아카펠라로도 우리네 일상의 조각들을 그대로 담백하게 들려줄 수 있다는 아카시아의 노래는 흥얼거릴 수 있고 노래방에서도 부를 수 있는, 가사가 살아있는 아카펠라다. 그래서 이번 싱글 타이틀인 ‘청춘예찬’은 바로 그들 자신의 이야기이다. 평균연령이 30대 중반인 이들에게 청춘은 막 손끝에서 놓친 보물이기도 하고, 미처 보물인줄 모르고 보내버린 아쉬움이기 하다. 누구나 자신의 청춘에게 미안하지 않았나... 그 청춘 끝에 서서 맞는 새로운 시간에 대한 설레임으로 두근거리는 맥박같은 리듬이 청춘을 기쁘게 떠나보내는 그들의 마음처럼 밝고 경쾌하다.

이어지는 ‘아카시아’ 역시 자신들의 노래에 대한 솔직한 애정을 담은 곡이다. 혼자하는 노래로는 이미 실패했던 사람들이 청춘을 지나 다시 모여 노래할 수 있기까지의 애상이 담긴 듯 차분한 미디움 템포의 노래로, 멤버 중에 작곡가가 포함되어 자작곡과 편곡이 가능한 이들의 강점이 살아있다. 이번 싱글에서 눈에 띄는 곡은 마지막 보너스트랙인 ‘작은별’이다. 자신들의 연령대에서 자연스럽게 관심을 가지게 되는 아이들에 대한 사랑이 담긴 노래로 어른들도 좋아할 수 있게 빠르지 않은 템포와 동요 답지않은 풍부한 편곡으로 국악레퍼토리에 이어 새로운 레퍼토리에 도전하고 있음을 보여준다.

싱글임에도 이렇게 꽉 찬 기분을 느끼게 하는 건 한걸음씩 차근히 앞으로 나가고 있다고 앨범 한 장만으로 증명하려 들지 않는, 조급하지 않은 이들의 마음이 전해져 와서일까. 한곡만 쏙 들어오면 된다는 생각을 버린 <청춘예찬>은 전트랙을 부담없이 이어들을 수 있게 편안하다. 어디나 나오는 요즘 노래들, 진하게 감정 과다인 R&B 아니면 도저히 따라 잡을 수 없는 빠른 댄스음악에 질린 사람들에게도, 유명한 해외곡을 편곡한 비슷비슷한 레파토리들에 식상한 아카펠라 팬들에게도 이들의 계속되는 도전은 아카시아 향처럼 신선할 것이다.
